Elizabeth Simpson

Gemologist and Expert Fine Jewelry Appraiser

Before becoming a gemologist, I had a long career in high-tech consulting. I earned my MBA and spent over 15 years as a trusted advisor to executives all over the world.

When I left the consulting world to pursue my dream of becoming a gemologist, I trained with the best in the world, the Gemological Institute of America. At the GIA, I earned the industry’s most prestigious credential as a Graduate Gemologist. My degree certifies my ability to identify, evaluate, and grade diamonds and other gemstones, a technical skill that is the foundation for accurate jewelry appraisals.

By creating my businesses, EMS Fine Jewelry, EMS Estates and The Jeweled Crescent, my dreams have come true. I thank my clients for the opportunity to serve them and live my purpose. I’m ready to put my passion and expertise for jewelry appraisals and consignment to work for you.

My elderly mother passed her jewelry on to me. I didn’t want to keep a lot of it and thought I could sell some and set up a fund for her. I had no idea how to start. I considered removing the stones and refining the gold for melt value, but that just felt wrong and some pieces wouldn’t be worth much.

Then I was fortunate to meet Elizabeth. She told me she could sell what I didn’t want to keep. She took great pictures, described each piece accurately and has sold a lot of it already! It doesn’t happen overnight but I am happy to wait for the right buyer. It is nice to have a professional take care of everything and I just sit back and receive checks. Elizabeth has been excellent to work with. I highly recommend her.

I met Elizabeth several months ago when the GIA recommended her. I needed someone to evaluate and sell a large collection of fine personal jewelry that my deceased wife loved.

After meeting Elizabeth, I found her integrity and knowledge to be amazing. She is a professional jewelry appraiser who knows just about everything regarding the world of fine jewelry. Elizabeth is still selling off the extensive list for a very fair price. It’s a success story!

We appreciate your help in expediting the process–many of the other jewelers we spoke with would have taken a week to appraise and it was nice to be able to keep my ring with me. Also, taking the time to walk us through the appraisal steps was informative.
You made us feel very comfortable as this was our first time having jewelry appraised, and we felt that you maintained a great balance between being professional and personal. We look forward to working with you in the future, specifically when we find our wedding bands.

I asked Elizabeth at EMS Estates to sell an antique brooch for me. Several other people said it was “un-sellable” as it wasn’t in fashion any longer.

Elizabeth found a buyer and did what others said was impossible – she sold it and got a decent price for it. Throughout the process, Elizabeth stayed in touch, letting me know what was going on. I highly recommend EMS Estates for both appraisal work as well as selling your jewelry. She also has a great selection of pieces to sell in her lovely shop.

Very pleased with EMS Estates service. I am professional jeweler and for last 20 years I used pretty much every known gemologist in Portland.

What sets apart Elizabeth from others: quick turn around time, very accurate unbiased appraisal, deep knowledge not only in diamonds but also in color gems and pearls, more than reasonable cost.

I Highly recommend Elizabeth to any professional jeweler or consumer for any of your jewelry appraisal needs.

Insurance coverage: When having jewelry insured, a full appraisal assures you of a comparable replacement in the event of a loss.

Internet Purchases: An independent appraisal can verify that diamonds and other jewelry match the certification or appraisal accompanying the item.

Want To Sell: If you decide to sell, trade, or bequeath your jewelry, a detailed appraisal is a valuable document to have.

Loss Claims: You will need an appraisal to claim a casualty loss for your insurance company or uninsured loss for the IRS.

Divorce: You should have an appraisal for division of property in a divorce.

Charitable Contributions: You will need an appraisal for tax deduction of a charitable contribution.
Professional Experience: A broker brings a knowledge and expertise of jewelry to the negotiation and pricing of every transaction.

Dealer Networks: Unless you work in the jewelry business, a broker will have a much wider reach for marketing your piece to other dealers. This specialized access helps attract multiple bids, enabling your piece to sell for the highest price possible.

Global Reach: It takes jewelry marketing experience, gemological education, and business acumen to develop and navigate a broker’s connections to a vast global network of dealers.

Multiple Selling Platforms: A broker utilizes online stores, retail establishments, wholesalers, and other clients to increase the chances, not only that your jewelry sells, but that it sells for the maximum amount.

Your Time: Jewelry marketing and negotiation take time. If you lack the time to spend on these activities, you risk not getting the best price for your items.
I evaluate and appraise your jewelry using state-of-the-art gemological equipment that exceeds the standards set by the GIA.
