Before getting language coaching I had no idea what to expect and, to make things worth, I wasn't even entirely sure what I wanted out of it! I just knew I felt a little lost with how to transition from intermediate to advanced in terms of getting comfortable with that (arbitrary-feeling labelling) emotionally as well as knowing how to change my approach to propel my journey into language learning at an "advanced" level.
At the back of my mind, I also knew there was the gnawing idea of branching out to start with a new language as well.
I liked that the conversations were relaxed and conversational. I felt like I could just open up about my vulnerabilities and my strengths (the latter of which I find more difficult to talk about/"admit" to), which allowed us to talk in depth about what techniques I could try and also more broadly about ways to approach language learning philosophically. At the same time, none of the conversation ever felt dry or complex.
I felt like I could just spill my thoughts and we worked together to put things in a clearer order to reassess and move forward.
I don't think anyone should go into language coaching expecting it to be like a class which, once complete, leads to levelling up. It's more of a discussion to refocus what you want out of your language and to see whether you're using the most effective methods for you to get what you want from your language.
Obviously I have also benefitted from the obvious concrete things like resources and techniques, but sometimes there's also a quiet gnawing need for clarity that just comes about from having to answer the right questions and Kerstin was great at finding which questions would allow me to bring about those answers. I would also say that language coaching is very much what you make it and what you choose to do with it. Kerstin is able to help you aim at a direction and give you advice about possible ways to get there, but it's ultimately about where you want to go and what you want to do and being honest with yourself about what you're willing and able to do. I found Kerstin's language coaching sessions very valuable and I would definitely recommend her to other language learners. I would also suggest that language learners bring all their questions and concerns and ideas to really unpack their thoughts and to get them excited about taking their language learning to the next level or in new directions (or both!).
