I recently began working with Neil Barman to seek Vectorworks training to upgrade my skills using the program. As a long time user of Vectorworks I always felt there were aspects and features to the software I wasn’t tapping into. Hiring Neil for training has made a huge difference in how I design and draft on Vectorworks, and finally after all these years I feel I can keep up and maximize this versatile and powerful CAD program to the fullest potential. Neil is very knowledgeable, experienced, and he has a gift for instructing others. If you want to go farther in your design business I would highly recommend Neil for yourself and your staff to get to the next level.

Hiring Neil for Training has made a huge difference

I am constantly impressed with Neil’s prompt and personable service. He’s just a delight to work with. Since using his service for very pointed questions, I find I have been able to excel at Vectorworks Landmark much quicker than I had with manuals and tutorials.

I look forward to continued training as I get into 3D and other more advanced Vectorworks tools!

I am constantly impressed with Neil’s prompt and personable service

We were afraid to make the jump from our old CAD program to the new Vectorworks, especially with deadlines for drafting and design. Neil has made it all very manageable and in a few short weeks we're now doing all of our projects on the new program. Even outside of training Neil is quick to answer questions and always has helpful tips to get us where we need to go. We've especially appreciated that he has tailored our training and helped us set up our templates to suit how we like to design, not to how he thinks we should be working.

Working with Neil has been a great experience. He adapts to your knowledge and skill level and has an easy to follow teaching method. I would definitely recommend Neil's services to someone who is just starting or someone with experience. His sessions are casual and are strictly based on your training needs. Thanks to Neil, I have become much more effective and efficient with Vectorworks. Looking forward to working with him in the future.

Thank you so much for all your help!

I always knew that Vectorworks had so much potential but I never felt confident to explore it. Working with Neil has made an overwhelming program feel less daunting. He is a wonderful instructor whom I would recommend to everyone! No one else knows Vectorworks like he does. I am looking forward to our next session!

M. Kushino - Mari Kushino Design

He is a wonderful instructor

As a high school drafting instructor I need to be on top of recent developments within Vectorworks. Sometimes the VW manual is not clear as to procedures. Neil Barman is an excellent instructor who uses clear and logical examples to upgrade my understanding of Vectorworks. I will be going back to Neil as I need to upgrade.

B. Birney - Stelly's Secondary School

Neil Barman is an excellent instructor
Yes. I can assist you with every aspects of starting to use Vectorworks anew beginning with the download and installation of the application, to navigating your Vectorworks Service Select account and a thorough interface overview. (The interface may look a bit daunting at first, like any similarly versatile and capable application but with my help you'll get a solid grasp of it.)

I have been told by many beginners that they very much appreciate how, despite my extensive knowledge of Vectorworks, I have explained the application very simply and clearly for them.
Almost everyone I have encountered who has been using Vectorworks for a long time either learned parts they need to through their own trial and error or from the last person in the office who learned it. (Remember the game "Broken Telephone"? The same thing happens when people try to teach each other how to use software.)

Unless you have already done organized, formal, Best Practice training, it's highly likely that you have learned how to use Vectorworks in one particular way and have never strayed from that way, even if it has its flaws and annoyances. It's also quite likely that there are still many things that you wish you could do with Vectorworks but cannot figure out how to do yourself.

This is where I can help.

Working together, we determine what it is you need to create and deliver and I guide you through Best Practice methods to get there. Some aspects of some of the methods you may indeed already know. If that's the case, we build upon your existing knowledge to make the method or workflow even better. I have yet to meet an existing Vectorworks user who did not benefit greatly from my training.
That is really one of those "How long is a piece of string?" type of questions.

The time is takes to learn how to use Vectorworks varies depending on what you want to do and create with the software.

When you book an initial consultation with me and we can discuss your goals, I can then provide a better sense of the time it could take to reach them.
I work with you to find out what you need to create and deliver and then create a customized training curriculum for you. This has proven to be an incredible value over offering "all-purpose" training workshops that may cover many aspects of Vectorworks that you already know or cover aspects of Vectorworks that don't relate to what you need to create and deliver.

Depending on what you want to do with Vectorworks, the training time needed may be an hour or two or we may find that more sessions are needed. The amount of time needed directly relates to what you specifically want to learn.
In order to determine the training that would be best for you, I like to discuss what it is you need to create. Ideally this includes seeing visual examples of what it is you want to deliver to your clients, colleagues and consultants. Vectorworks is very versatile and can do many things and creators tend to have a specific idea of what they want their deliverables to look like or how they need them to work.

Once we review your needs, I can then outline the training that I would recommend to get there, along with a rough estimate of the time it should take. Everyone learns in different ways and at different rates, so actual times may vary.
I use screensharing software to view your screen as I guide you through answers to your questions. I provide clear instructions to direct you through techniques and workflows on your own computer.

By doing training this way, you get to learn techniques by actually doing them yourself rather than just watching someone else do them. This has proven time and time again to be a highly effective way to learn Vectorworks.
Yes, if you are in the Victoria, BC area, on-site training can certainly be arranged.

On-site training can also be arranged on occasions where I am traveling to your city. Please enquire about my travel schedule.

If on-site training isn't possible, rest assured that my remote training (see above) is also very effective and many have benefited from it. In fact, most of my training clients are remote and that hasn't stopped us from accomplishing great work together.
Book an initial consultation with me and I can help determine this based on your current skills and how you would like to be using Vectorworks.

It has yet to occur that someone has ended up wanting or needing less training time than they originally thought they would. In every case so far, we have covered all the topics and questions they have wanted to and, in the process, we have unlocked many more aspects of Vectorworks that have benefited them.
No. Once you prepay for an amount of training time, it's yours to use whenever you like and whenever I have availability. (Unless I have indicated in the About Me section above that I'm not taking on any new ongoing training clients until a certain date, there are typically many available spots each week.)

Most often clients will use several of their hours in a short time span, covering topics that they have always wanted assistance with or on topics they need for a project on which they are currently working. Then they spend some time using the techniques we've covered and practicing on their own. After this they use the rest of their training time covering follow-up questions or taking their new-found techniques or workflows further.

How and when you use your training time is up to you, your schedule and your pace of learning, but your prepaid training time does not have an "expiry date".

Another benefit of having prepaid training time is that you can also send me an email with your questions and I will reply as soon as possible with guidance.
Yes, I can do so if everyone needs the same or similar training. (This usually occurs in companies where all staff are at roughly the same experience level, or where there may be more experienced Vectorworks users who should review the material that everyone else is learning.)

In cases where experience levels are greatly different and not everyone needs to review the same material, I recommend arranging different training sessions for Vectorworks users of different skill levels. This tends to be more productive for everyone and the best use of training resources.
You will need to have:

- A computer with Vectorworks installed. (Having the current version of Vectorworks is best, though I can work with some previous versions as well. Be aware that previous versions may be missing some of the great features I can help you use.)

- A mic & speaker setup on your computer in such a way that it works well and doesn't produce feedback. A USB headset is best in this regard, though even Apple's earbuds work well.

- A notebook & pencil, if you would like to take some notes during our session. (I highly recommend this.)

- Questions, curiosity and a desire to learn Vectorworks.
Like many Vectorworks users, I started using it long ago simply as a digital replacement for a drafting board. (I am originally trained in hand drafting, so I know the craft and art of making great looking drawings.)

After some time using Vectorworks and seeing the intriguing marketing material showing how much it could do, I decided to find out more. I modified my project schedule to allow for some time to train and I incorporated this training with doing actual design projects, so that all of my learning had purpose. In short tim I was seeing tremendous results in terms of productivity, speed, accuracy and overall enjoyment of using Vectorworks. I also found that I had a particular knack at understanding and explaining the application.

There was no going back after this.

Since that time I continue to do my own learning every day:
- I myself regularly connect with a trainer who is widely considered to be a Vectorworks "Guru",
- I often review the training material in the Vectorworks Service Select portal and free training material available online. (If you are a Service Select member, you should check it out too!)
- I train many others, which is an incredible way to keep refreshing ones knowledge.
- I'm actively involved in the Vectorworks Community Forum. (As a Vectorworks user, you should be too!)
- I lead the Technical Support team at Paxar, the Canadian Distributor of Vectorworks.
- I attend the Vectorworks Design Summit each year... and in fact I even spoke at the 2016 Vectorworks Design Summit!

Above it all, I genuinely enjoy using & creating Vectorworks and helping others do the same. This charges and engages me to keep learning so that I can share the knowledge with my clients.
Currently I take payment via Interac e-transfer, which is available through most online banking services.

Please note that payment in full is required prior to training services. This is very much the same as would be done for any similar course or seminar with similarly valuable information.
Because I’m based in Victoria, BC, on-site training is typically easily available within the city. Regular rates apply for locations in Victoria south of McKenzie Ave and east of Admirals Rd. Beyond those points, a small additional charge applies for travel for locations in Greater Victoria.

While remote, screensharing-based training is routinely chosen by those further afield,
on-site training is also available for most locations on Vancouver Island, elsewhere in BC and across Canada. Please contact me for more information.
